Sufism- Muhasaba -Self-Examination- Dr.Alan Godlas
Muhasaba (self-examination) is an important principle of Islamic Sufism. While shining the interrogatory light on oneself is usually uncomfortable, even surgically painful, it is excruciatingly necessary in order to find the hidden cancers, combat, and root them out. "Call yourself to account before you are called to account [on the Day of Judgement]!" حَاسِبُوا أَنْفُسَكُمْ قَبْلَ أَنْ تُحَاسَبُوا (Included in the canonical hadith collection, Sunan al-Tirmidhi, stated by 'Umar ibn al-Khattab, the fourth of the "rightly-guided" caliphs). At the same, and with even more effort, one must gratefully apply and bathe in the all-encompassing healing salve of the loving remembrance of the unconditionally merciful presence of Allah.
