The Muhammad Iqbal Mosque , Istaravshan, Tajikstan - A Beautiful Tribute to Allama Iqbal (RA)

The Muhammad Iqbal mosque is located in the northern section of the old town. It is a little difficult to find, as you have to navigate many narrow winding alleyways before locating it. The first sight that you will see is the three arched brick entrance with lanterns on top at either side. The entrance has Persian script above it. The structure is modern and a beautiful tribute to Allama Muhammad Iqbal of Pakistan.
The brick construction has a marble facade at the front and arched windows. The front is grey marble, and the most impressive feature are the pink guldastas at either side of the building. There is also a beautifully manicured garden and a three tiered fountain in front of the main entrance to the mosque. The interior of the mosque is quite spacious and has many beige columns supporting a wide wooden overhead balcony. If you look to the right on entering, a yellow and orange decorated section hosts the mihrab.
Tajikistan celebrates the birthday and death anniversary of Allama Iqbal. Allama was born in Pakistan (then known as British India) in 1877. He is known as the "Spiritual Father of Pakistan". He studied law in England, and ended up joining the All-India Muslim League. He delivered a famous speech in December 1930, which was known as the "Allahabad Address". It was the first time that the dream of a separate muslim state in north-west India was mentioned. He unfortunately died in 1938, nine years before his dream became a reality. This beautiful mosque is a fitting tribute to his memory.
After viewing the mosque, walk south to the ancient Kuk-Gumbaz) mosque. If you continue in a south easterly direction, the Hauz-i-Sangin Mosque can also be visited.
