In Beyond Bilal: Black History in Islam, aside from Black history in the Qur’an and the black companions of the Prophet ﷺ we focused on the History of Islam in West Africa and the role Black Muslims played in the West. In this second volume, based on Mustafa Briggs lectures “Africans in Asia” and “Black History in the Arab World,” we will move eastward and explore the little discussed relationship between Africa and Asia and the Middle East.

We will first look at Black History in the Arabian Peninsula, discovering the history of the legendary black heroes of pre-Islamic Arabia, who were some of the most well known poets, warriors, explorers and conquerors of Arabia. We will then explore the brilliant black intellectuals and revolutionaries who impacted the Islamic Empires of the Middle Ages, including the first Muftis of Makkah, Egypt and Syria, as well as some of the key narrators of hadith and early scholars in the Islamic Tradition.

We will also delve into the spread of Islam in East Africa; from Sudan and Somalia all the way down to the Swahili Coast, and the stories of mighty kingdoms in India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh that were ruled and shaped by East African kings, saints, and adventurers, the communities they developed, and the impact that their legacies have left on the region until the modern day.

Mustafa Briggs is a graduate of Arabic and International Relations from the University of Westminster whose dissertation focused on Arabic Literature and Literacy in West Africa. Mustafa started an MA in Translation at SOAS, University of London with a specialization in Arabic and Islamic Texts, before going onto al-Azhar University in Cairo, Egypt where he is currently doing another degree in Islamic Studies and Arabic. Mustafa rose to international acclaim for his ‘Beyond Bilal: Black History in Islam’ lecture series which saw him explore and uncover the deep routed relationship between Islam and Black History; and the legacy of contemporary African Islamic Scholarship and its role in the International Relations of the Muslim World as well as the vital role Female Scholarship plays in the West African Islamic Tradition, which he presented at over 30 Universities across 3 continents, including Oxford, Cambridge, Harvard and Yale. Beyond Bilal was then turned into a book, which became an amazon best seller within the first month of its release and lead to an American and European book tour, during which Mustafa was hosted and interviewed by various scholars at various Academic and Islamic institutions such as Imam Omar Sulaiman of Yaqeen Institute, Shaykh Suhaib Webb of Islamic Centre of New York University, and Professor Shadaab Rahemtulla of Edinburgh University, where the book is currently being studied as part of the educational curriculum.
