Join us for the pre-launch of the first-ever complete translation of Imam al-Busiri’s poem, Qasīdatal-Hamziyya. Shaykh Hamza Yusuf of Zaytuna College, California, who translated the text, will be accompanied by the Fes Singers from Morocco. Qasīdat al-Hamziyya is less known than Busiri’s monumental Qasīdat al-Burda, but is a greater literary accomplishment, comprising 456 verses. Busiri’s masterpiece encapsulates the biography and virtues of Prophet Muhammad, making it a unique contribution to the tradition of the panegyric form. Published by Abu Zahra Press and Sandala, this event offers the English-speaking world an insight into this time-honoured tradition.

Better Than the Burdah? Shaykh Hamza Yusuf on Imam al-Busiri's Hidden Gem - Blogging Theology       Jul 11, 2025

Book: The Hamziyyah  of Imam al-Busiri - Shaykh Hamza Yusuf

“After the Qur’an and the prophetic sayings, the highest level of eloquence to which any Arab can aspire is realized in Arabic poetry. Thus, poets in subsequent generations invariably expressed their love for the Prophet in marvels of verse that poured forth from their tongues and pens like pearls unbound. … Having spent over fifty-five years of my life immersed in the poetry of Imam al-Busiri, listening to the Burdah and the Hamziyyah sung in weekly gatherings, and having penned two poetic expansions of each myself, I can say that Shaykh Hamza’s translation deserves both praise and celebration.” Shaykh Muhammad al- Yaqoubi, from the Foreword.

“Piety toward the Prophet Muhammad and celebration of his life as exemplary are central to over 1,400 years of Muslim spirituality, but with the exception of Annemarie Schimmel, few scholars of Islam in the West have focused on this durable phenomenon. Hamza Yusuf ’s accessible and insightful translation of a praise poem by a celebrated poet and mystic adds a key work to our literature in English on Muslim spirituality.” Juan Cole, Richard P. Mitchell Collegiate Professor of History, University of Michigan

Book: Guardian of the Cloak: In Defence of al-Busiri's Ode al Burda -Shaykh Dawud ibn Sulayman al-Naqshbandi al-Baghdadi - Amjad Mahmood (translation)

For centuries, the Qasidah al-Burdah of Imam al-Busiri has been one of the most popular odes eulogising and praising the Prophetﷺ. In recent times, however, there have been grave accusations against the poem, with claims that some of its lines contain polytheism (shirk) and disbelief (kufr). This treatise is a thorough scholarly response to such charges against the Burdah.
