Correct Relationships: Adab is the Heart of Islam’ explores adab — the propriety of comportment, attitude, and conduct — as both the condition and the end of true religious and spiritual maturity. Drawing on the classical Islamic tradition, the seminar traces adab from its root meaning as an invitation to a shared table to its place as the very heart of din: where there is no propriety, there is no ihsan, and where there is no ihsan, there is no propriety. Attendees will gain a clear, practical understanding of why correct relationships — with Allah, with oneself, and with others — are the fruit of adab, and will be equipped to reflect honestly on their own comportment and growth. This session is especially valuable for anyone seeking to deepen their spiritual life through the cultivation of good character, not through outward observance alone. This is the first of a series of seminars that will explore different applications of adab. With Shaykh Hazem Shamale: 

Shaykh Hazem Shamale was born in Homs, Syria, in 1989, where he began studying the traditional Islamic sciences, Arabic, and Quran memorization at an early age under Shaykh Mohammad Saeed al-Kaheel, Homs’s most senior scholar, who provided him extensive suhba, tarbiya, and spiritual guidance. He continued his studies in Damascus at the Islamic Institute of Saad ibn Obada and under a number of senior Damascene scholars, receiving ijazas from Shaykh Mohammad Saeed al-Kaheel, Shaykh Ibrahim al-Kaleefa al-Ihsaie, Shaykh AbdAlhady Kharsa, and Shaykh Mohammad Haydara al-Jaylani, as well as in the Holy Quran and Hadith, and taking the path from scholars of both the Shadhili and Qadiri orders. Appointed Imam at the age of 18, he has since taught and called people to Allah in Homs, Damascus, Beirut, and Istanbul. And Dr. Talal Al-Azem: 

Dr. Talal Al-Azem is an instructor at Seekers Guidance. He studied the traditional Islamic sciences in Syria and Turkey and has written and lectured extensively on the history and philosophy of Islamic education, as well as the history of Muslim jurisprudence. He is the author of a history of the Hanafi madhhab entitled Rule-Formulation and Binding Precedent in the Madhhab-Law Tradition (Brill, 2017), and of Prayers of Occasions (OTKF, 2010), a handbook of Muslim ritual prayer (salat). Dr. Al-Azem holds a PhD and MSt from the University of Oxford and a BA in History and Near Eastern Studies from the University of Michigan.
