Biography of Sayyid Jama'at Ali Shah (r.a)1841-1951 Part 18 Sirat Amir e Millat Pakistan Movement (Tahreek e Pakistan ) 1. In 1925 he presided over first All-India Sunni Conference, giving the keynote speech. Then in September 1935,having been declared the " leader of Muslim Community" (amir-i-millat),at a special conference of the "United Muslim Community" (ittihad-i-millat),he stressed the need for love of Prophet saws followed by the need for active propagation of Islam, for unity of Sufis and Ulama. Throughout the Pakistan movement,Sayyid Jamaat Ali Shah (r.a) supported Mohammad Ali Jinnah and Muslim League. At the 1946 All-India Sunni Conference, he publicly exclaimed (to counter those who accused Jinnah of being non-Muslim), "Jinnah is an intimate of God." The conference was attended by 500 shaykhs, 7000 ulama, and over 100,000 other people, which encouraged the Muslim League to form Pakistan. A committee with many scholars and Sufis was set up to make sure that the new Pakistan government would be Islamic. He was in Hyderabad,Deccan when he heard about attack on Quid e Azam (r.a) with a knife. He immediately dispatched Bakhshi Ghulam Mustafa Khan (r.a), his Khlifah to Bombay with gifts and a letter for Mr. Jinnah. He wrote " The nation has given me the title of Amir e Millat and I should be doing what you are doing for the creation of Pakistan however I am more than 100 years old with fragile health. My responsibility is on your shoulder therefore it is my duty to help you .Nimrud's opposition to Abraham (Hazrat Ibrahim),Pharoe's (Firoon) opposition to Moses (Hazrat Musa )and Abu Jahal's animosity for our Noble Prophet (saws) became the reason for the success of their Prophetic Mission .This attack on you will become a good omen for your success.I congratulate you that you will succeed in your mission and do not worry about the difficulties you will face to achieve your goals.Whosoever Allah Taala wants to succeed,to test He creates enemies. I pray to Allah Taala that your enemies will face defeat.I and my fellow disciples (Yaran e Tariqat ) will fully cooperate and help you.You also promise to not deviate from this noble mission."The gifts included Quran, Prayer Rug,Prayer Beads,( Tasbeeh),Shal, blanket and other precious items.Bakhshi Sahib delivered letter and gifts to Muhtarama Fatima Jinnah since doctors did not allow any visitors.Mr. Jinnah responded after few days "With prayers of pious persons like you, I definitely will be successful.I promise to you that whatever difficulties come my way,I will continue to pursue my mission.. You have sent me Quran for the reason that I am a Leader of the Muslims.I cannot lead without knowledge of Religion (Din) and Quran.I promise that I will read Quran.I have acquired English translations.I am searching for a scholar who can educate me in English. You have sent me a prayer rug for the reason that if i do not obey Allah 's commands then people won't obey my commands.I promise that I will offer prayers. You sent prayer beads so that I recite blessings on Prophet (saws)-Darud Sharif. The person who does not seek blessings & mercy of Allah Taala on Prophet (saws),how can he himself expect mercy from Allah Taala.I will follow this suggestion as well. When Quid e Azam 's letter was read to Amir e Millat (r.a) ,it made him extremely happy and said " I am in Hyderabad Deccan and Jinnah Sahib is in Bombay then how could he perceive my intentions which I did not express in my letter. No doubt Jinnah Sahib is friend of Allah (Wali'Allah)..

Fitna e Irtad .Calamity of Apostacy

The Hindus organized two highly anti Muslim movements, the Shudhi and the Sangathan. The former movement was designed to convert Muslims to Hinduism or drive them out and the latter was meant to create solidarity among the Hindus in the event of communal conflict, started by Arya Samaj and its founder Swami Daynand Saraswati and his followers like Sawami Shraddanand, who also worked on the Sangathan consolidation aspect of Hinduism, in North India , especially Punjab in early 1900s, though it gradually spread across India . Shuddhi had a anti-Muslim agenda by converting Muslims to Hinduism, and prevent low-caste Hindus from converting to other religions .

Hazrat Sayyid Jama'at Ali Shah (r.a) started a unique movement to stop this fitna and sent Tablighi missions across India. His memorable khutaba was deliverd on April 23,1923.He emphasized the need for Muslims to sacrifice everything to stop the Arya Samaj and established a special fund . He himself led the first tablighi mission to Ruhtak that included 15 scholars and was very successful. Anjuman Khudam al-Sufiyya established 45 Religious Schools (Madaris ) in different cities where Arya Samaj was active to educate thousands of children, men and women. The Anjuman also built Mosques and Hospitals and developed social & economic network to help the affected population. He praised the efforts of Anjuman at its annual meeting stating " Some groups with lack of understanding oppose Sufis and consider them worthless and passive. The Sufis deserve a lot of praise for serving Islam for the pleasure of Allah with sincerity. We can witness their contributions and successful efforts in propagation of Islam in Indian Subcontinent.Every Muslim is familiar with the missions of Khawaja Gharib Nawaz (r.a), Hazrat Baqi Billah (r.a),Hazrat Makhdum Hajveri Data Ganj Bakhsh (r.a) and many other Great Sufis. They surmounted lot of difficulties to achieve their mission. This is very evident from reading our history. "Aftab Amad Dalil e Aftab " Rising of the Sun is proof of the Sun." Anjuman has achieved tremendous success in stopping Fitna e Irtad due to blessings ( baraka ) of these Sufis. Anjuman deserves praise for opening madrasas, mosques, hospitals and bringing back thousands to the fold of Islam. We thank Allah Taala for His favours."

Sirat Amir e Millat

Hazrat Sayyid Jama'at Ali Shah (r.a)'s Tasawwuf (Sufism)

Following the reality of shari'a (Haqiqat e Shariat) with heart at peace (Itminan e Qalb) is real Tasawwuf (Sufism). In Hadith Qudsi it is stated "My servant draws not near to Me with anything more loved by Me than the religious duties I have enjoined upon him, and My servant continues to draw near to Me with supererogatory works so that I shall love him." Hazrat Amir e Millat (r.a) acted upon this Hadith. He emphasized the importance of rights of Allah (Haquq Allah) and rights of people (Haquq an-Nas).Renunciation of this world (Tark e Dunya) was not the part of his tasawwuf. He used to eat healthy food, wear clean clothes and participated in worldly affairs according to the guidelines of shari'a.He himself followed the shari'a and Sunna and also emphasized its compliance to his disciples (Yaran e Tariqat). When you follow the shari'a with heart at peace, the Attributes of Allah Taala reflect on your heart and you achieve very high spiritual stations. This is reality of tasawwuf (sufism) and this is the Uswa e Hasana (Excellent Prophetic Example).
Hazrat Sayyid Jama'at Ali Shah (r.a) revived the traditional shari'a focused tasawwuf. He belonged to Naqshbandiyya Mujaddadiyya Sufi Order.Imam Rabbani Mujaddad Alif Sani (r.a) emphasized the following of Shariah (taqlid e shariat) and Sunnah (Iteba'a e sunnat). This was also the way of Hazrat Amir e Millat (r.a).Performing religious duties according to sunna of the beloved Prophet (saws) is the spirit (ruh) of tasawwuf. Essence of his education was to practice dhikr, perform tahajjud regularly, recite darood sharif, perform prayers, practice fasting and other obligations and sunnas, take care of rights of people, follow the Prophet (saws) in manners (ikhlaq),actions (amal ) and habits (adat)and avoiding prohibited & unlawful completely. He used give easy wazaif to his disciples.
Disciplining the selfish self (nafs e ammara) is very difficult task and a great struggle (Jihad e Akbar). It was a great spiritual accomplishment to take care of people and worldly affairs and keep your heart busy with remembrance of God and feel His presence all the time.He used to say "Dil ba yar, dast ba kar " "Heart with God and hand with work".He guided thousands to straight path (sirat e mustaqeem ),made them Zakir (busy with remembrance of God) and helped them achieve the station of Nafs e Mutme'inna (Contented Self ).
He followed Naqshbandi Sufi Way (Naqshbandi Tasawwuf) strictly which is based on Quran & Sunna. There are five pillars of Tariqa (Sufi Way): 1. Dhikr ( Remembrance of God) 2. Fikr (Reflection) 3.Muraqba (Contemplation) 4. Muhasba (Reckoning,Self-Assessment) 5. Rabita (Contact & Connection).Hazrat Bahauddin Naqshband (r.a) said "Tariqa e ma az nowadir ast.wa urwa ti alwuthqa ast.ma ra fazal awurda und-----" "Our Way is very rare and very precious. It is the urwati-l-wuthqa ("Firm Handhold"), the way of keeping firm and steadfast in the footsteps of the Prophet (saws) and of his Companions . They brought me to this Way from the door of Favors, because at its beginning and at its end, I witnessed nothing but the Favors of God. In this Way great doors of Heavenly Knowledge will be opened up to the seeker who follows in the footsteps of the Prophet (saws)."
Hazrat Amir e Millat ( r.a )was a living example and role model of this tariqa in 19th and 20th centuries.

Love and Adab of Prophet (saws).
Hazrat Sayyid Jama'at Ali Shah (r.a) had pure love (Ishq e Kamil) and great respect (Adab) for Prophet (saws). As soon as he reached Madinah, he always performed ritual bath and then visited the Prophet (saws) to offer Salam with great humility and love. His face will change colours and perspire even in winters and he will tremble with awe & emotions since this was the court (darbar) of king of kings. During Ottoman period he was allowed to spend entire night inside the Rouza Sharif (Tomb). This was a great honour and privilege and also had permission to take four disciples with him. Allah Taala says in Quran " Qul in Kuntum Tuhibbuna-llaha Fa-t-Tabi'uni Yuhbibakumu-llahu wa Yaghfir lakum Dhunubakum,wa-llahu Ghafurur-Rahim."
Say (O Muhammad)"If you love Allah then follow me , Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. Allah is Forgiving,Merciful " Quran 3:31. Following (Iteba'a) becomes perfect when you follow Uswah e Hasana (Perfect Prophetic Role Model) at every step of the way.Once following the Prophet (saws) achieves perfection then develops the perfect love.Once love of Prophet (saws) is perfected then Allah Taala showers His blessings and blesses that person with His love which is the highest station. Hazrat Sayyid Jama'at Ali Shah had perfect faith (Iman) and belief (Eteqad) in Allah Taala 's Essence and Attributes . His goal was to follow Uswa e Hasana in every deed, matter and living moment. He was in constant state of Love of Prophet (Ishq e Rasul) saws. Before Hajj he will spend most of his time in Prophet's Presence (saws) in Madinah. He was blessed with Ziyarat-e-Rasul in sleep and when awake. His spiritual status and nearness to Prophet (saws) has been narrated in dreams of many pious persons. He received the title of Qutb and Ghawth. May Allah Taala increase his darajat. Amin

Pilgrimages & Ziyara ( Hajj wa Ziyara)
Sudden Decision to go for Hajj after listening to Na'at (Devotional Poetry in praise of Prophet .saws.):
Hazrat Sayyid Jama'at Ali Shah (r.a) was staying at Potalian Mosque in Lahore after a long trip in 1916. It was winter and he had high fever.Mir Hidayatullah (Pricipal Medical College,Amirtasir),Mir Habibullah and Hafiz Anwar Ali Rohtaki (Judge) were visiting. He was informed that Hafiz Peeli Bheeti is here to pay respect.Hafiz Khalil Ahmad Peeli Bheeti was a honorary judge and famous Na'atiya Poet.Hazrat apologized from Hafiz Ji for not been able to stand up to welcome him because he deserves to be honored for his devotional poetry in praise of beloved Prophet (saws) and then asked him if has written a new na'at.Hafiz Ji opened his Na'at Collection and recited this na'at:
Za'iroon ke bheer ho,Rouza Tera ho ,Mein na hoon
Wa'ay nakami ke ik khaq e Khuda ho,Mein na hoon
crowds of visitors at your Rouza ( Prophet's Tomb),and I am not there
O' my bad luck, there is God's Creation and I am not there
Hazrat asked Hafiz Ji to repeat it and took the blanket off.Hafiz Ji then read the second verse.
Sadqay ess Rouzay kay jis par sar say,dil say,jan say
ik jahan,ik khalq,ik alim fida ho,mein na hoon
My life, heart and head be sacrificed at this Rouza
A world,a creation,a universe is in love and I am not there.
Mein wo radd e khalq thaira hoon ke Bazm e Shah mein
Uns ho, Jinn ho, Firashta ho, Hawa ho,Mein na hoon
I am the rejected one,In king's court
are humans, jinns, angels and wind but I am not there.
At this point Hazrat was sitting as if he has no fever, was praising the poetry and was in state of ectacy
Mein Wahan Hoon Wo Wahan Hoon ya Na Hoon,Par yeh na ho
Shah kay darbar mein churcha meira ho,Mein na Hoon.
I am there,He is there or not,but this should not happen
In King's court,I am being mentioned and I am not there.
Hazrat became resless, came out of room to the mosque and asked Haji Buta to pack the bags and leave for Madinah. During the travel on the ship he continued to repeat the verse.
Shah kay Darbar mein churcha meira ho,mein na hoon

This is a false claim of love that "I wish to be in Madinah".

Book Review by Asif Naqshbandi June 15,2003
This book fulfills two roles: it provides a very good history of the Naqshbandi Sufi Order in general and it also looks in detail at the life of one of the greatest Sufi saints of the 19th/20th century Sayyedina Ameer al Millat Grandshaykh Pir Sayyid Jama`at Ali Shah Naqshbandi (may Allah be pleased with him) of Alipur Sharif, Pakistan, as a case study. It is a welcome first look at this great saint and also it gives detailed information on Naqshbandi Sufi practices and beliefs. It should appeal to all those interested in tasawwuf and also of religion in the Subcontinent as well as to the millions of admirers and disciples of Grandshaykh, Hazrat Amir al Millat who was the Ghawth [spiritual helper] of his age. The only criticism is that it is very academic and meant for the specialist student of Sufism and not for the lay-person; yet with a bit of application all can benefit from this book and discover real Islam from a Master!
