Dr. Jerald F. Dirks and Debra L. Dirks journeyed into Islam through many avenues and byways, saying Shahadah in 1993. Al-Hamdulillah! Their journey went through the Arabian horse and its history, Christian theology, and ancient and modern history, and it continues to be an ongoing process still today. They consider themselves to be students of Islam and are always learning and sharing. Currently, Dr. and Mrs. Dirks are writing books, conducting workshops, and giving speeches around the globe.

Book: Muslims in American History : A Forgotten Legacy:Dr. Jerald F. Dirks

Muslims in American History: A Forgotten Legacy confronts the prevalent myth that Islam in America is a relatively recent phenomenon. In reality, there is a centuries long history of the Muslim presence in America, which is all too often overlooked or misidentified. Written documentation, linguistic evidence, and reports of early Spanish explorers of the New World suggest Muslim contact with the Americas prior to Columbus. Muslims and Moriscos sailed with Columbus and were part of many of the Spanish explorations of the New World.

Muslims comprised a significant percentage of the enslaved Africans who were brought to the Americas, and many Islamic residuals have found their way into contemporary African-American life and culture. At least one Muslim fought for American independence during the Revolutionary War, and many other Muslims were prepared to fight to keep American independence during the War of 1812. Another prominent Muslim was part of the taming! of the Wild West. Beginning in the late 19th century, successive waves of Muslim immigrants enriched America, and the phenomenon of Americans converting to Islam became increasingly widespread. In reviewing this history, the author presents a series of brief biographies of individual Muslims to illustrate the Muslim presence at each stage in American history. These biographies provide valuable role models with which Muslim youth in America can identify as they search for their identities as both Americans and Muslims.

1. Qad Kafani
(Kullama Naadaytu Ya Hu,
Qaala Ya `Abdi Ana-llah
Every time I called out to Him,
He replied, “O My servant! I am Allah!”)

Qad kafaanee ‘ilmu Rabbi, min su-aalee wakhtiyaaree
Fadu’aa-ee wabtihaalee, shaahidunlee biftiqaaree
My Lord’s knowledge has sufficed me from requesting and choosing
My prayer and my supplication are a witness to my impoverishment

Falihaadhas sirri -ad’oo, fi yasaaree wa ‘isaaree
-Anaa ‘abdun saara fakharee, dimna faqree wad tiraaree
By this secret I supplicate, in times of ease and hardship
I am a slave who has become proud in his poverty and desperation (in Allah)

Yaa -ilaahee wa maleekee, -anta ta’lam kayfa Haalee
Wa bimaa qad Halla qalbee, min humoomin washtighaalee
O My Lord, my King, You know my state
And what has settled in my heart from worries and preoccupations

Fataadaraknee bilutfin, minka yaa Mawlal mawaalee
Yaa kareemal wajhi ghithnee, qabla -an yafnas tibaaree
So restore me with gentle grace from You, O Master of masters!
O Most Generous One, save me before I exhaust my patience (with myself)!

Yaa saree’al ghauthi ghauthan, minka yudriknaa saree’an
Yahzimul ‘usra wa ya-tee, billadhee -arjoo jamee’an
O Swift in granting aid! Grant me aid from you, which will reach me swiftly
Vanquishing all difficulty, and bringing [The fulfilment of] all that I hope for

Yaa qareeban yaa mujeeban, yaa ‘aleeman yaa samee’an
Qad taHaqqaqtu bi’ajzee, wa khudu’ee wankisaaree
O Most Near! O Responder (to supplications)! All-Knowing! All-Hearing One!
I have realised my incapacity, lowliness and utter brokenness

Lam -azal bilbaabi waaqif, farHaman Rabbi wuqoofee
Wa biwaadil fadli ‘aakif, fa-adim Rabbi ‘ukoofee
I remain standing by Your door, so have mercy my Lord on my standing
And so I devote myself to the valley of grace, make my devotion everlasting O Lord!

Wa liHusnizh zhanni -ulaazim, fahwa khillee wa Haleefee
Wa -aneesee wa jaleesee, toola laylee wa nahaaree
A good opinion (of my Lord) is binding, for He is my Close Friend, my Ally
My Intimate Companion, who sits with me throughout the day and the night

Haajatan finnafsi yaa Rab, faqdihaa yaa khayra qaadee
Wa -ariH sirree wa qalbee, min lazhaahaa wash shuwaazhi
The need in my soul, O Lord! fulfil it, O Best of those who fulfil!
And ease my inner essence (soul) and my heart from the burning fire inside them

Fi suroorin wa Huboorin, wa -idhaa maa kunta raadee
Falhanaa walbastu Haalee, wa shi’aaree wa dithaaree
If You are pleased (with me) in happiness and in joy!
Then bliss and expansion are my state, my slogan and my covering

Kitab al-Tawhid: The Book of Monotheism Vol.I-II (2 Volumes Set). Paperback - 2025
by Abu Mansur al-Maturidi (Translated by Tahir Uluc)

Istanbul: Ibn Haldun Universitesi, 2025. Paperback. New. In English. Translated by Tahir Uluc; edited with annotations and an introduction by Ramon Harvey. 696 p. 16x24 cm. Oneness (tawhid) is not only the outermost gate of entry to Islam, but also its deepest dimension because tawhid, which begins with accepting God as the only being worthy of worship, manifests itself in every aspect of existence. Abu Mansur al-Maturidi's (d. 333/944) masterpiece, Kitab al-tawhid, is perhaps the oldest work available that deals with this comprehensive understanding of tawhid in Islam and traces it in all aspects of existence. Al-Maturidi is important first and foremost due to his status as the eponym of one of the two main schools of Sunn_ kal_m. The Maturidi tradition is a theological articulation of the _anaf_ school of ethics and law, itself one of the oldest and largest such schools in the Muslim world. But al-Maturidi also has a wider significance, reflecting the depth and subtlety of his theological and philosophical ideas, as well as the coherence of the resultant system. This elevates him to sit among both the great theologians of the Islamic tradition, and the great philosophers of religion. An English translation of al-Maturidi's Kitab al-Tawhid is a debt owed not just to the field of Islamic studies, but to the global Muslim community (umma), and ultimately world literature.

Transcendent God, Rational World: A Maturidi Theology (Edinburgh Studies in Islamic Scripture and Theology) 1st Edition
by Ramon Harvey (Author)

Ramon Harvey revisits the Muslim theologian Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī (d. 333/944) from Samarqand and puts his system, and that of the Māturīdī school, into lively dialogue with modern thought. Combining rigorous study of Arabic Māturīdī texts with insights from Husserl’s phenomenology and analytic theology, Harvey explores themes from epistemology and metaphysics to the nature of God and specific divine attributes (omniscience and wisdom, creative action, divine speech and the Qur’an). His systematic treatment of these topics shows that a contemporary Muslim philosophical theology, or kalām jadīd, can be true to the past, yet dynamic in the present, and can provide original and constructive answers to perennial theological questions.

Biography: Muhammad Ali Mojaradi

Muhammad Ali Mojaradi was raised in Michigan in an Iranian immigrant household. At age fifteen—despite the protests of his family—he moved to Tehran where he lived with his grandparents and attended high school.
In 2015 he moved back to the United States, later studying Economics and Middle Eastern studies at the University of Michigan while working as a researcher and Persian translator.
At UofM he studied Persian poetry formally for the first time and founded @persianpoetics, hoping to expose his friends to the world of Persian poetry. He also chose the pen name ‘sharghzadeh’ meaning ‘struck by the east’ in Persian, an antonym of ‘gharbzadeh.’
After completing his studies at the University of Michigan, he traveled to Jordan where he studied Arabic at Qasid Arabic Institute and Jordan University. The pandemic forced him to cut his studies short and return to America after initially planning to remain in Jordan to continue his study of Arabic and Islam.
Upon returning to America, he began to work on @persianpoetics full-time, eventually launching the viral #rumiwasmuslim campaign, attracting international media attention.
In 2020 he returned to Tehran to locate rare books and further study Persian poetry while immersed in the Persian language.
In 2021 Muhammad began teaching Persian privately, and shortly afterward he began hosting live courses, first teaching a general introduction to Persian poetry, followed by a study of Saʿdi’s Gulistān, Bustān, and Pand-Nāma. He also taught a course on Female poets, book one of Rumi’s magnum opus ‘the Masnawi’ and Hāfiz.
In 2024, he moved to New York, where he currently resides. He is available to host talks, lectures, and courses focused on Persian poetry. Muhammad also accepts translation projects of all kinds. For any inquiry, you can contact him via email: muhammadmojaradi(at)gmail.com
