We come to You poor and needy
Traditional qasida – Author unknown

We come to You poor and needy, o You Selfsufficient
You, who never cease doing us good.
We became used to receive all favours from You,
hoping that (the favours) we used to receive from You will ever continue.

Your unshevelled paupers are driven out of their wits
by love for You, the ultimate end (desire).
For there is none like You in  richness and selfsufficiency,
and in poverty and neediness there is none like our lot.

We see You revealed in every thing
while we have no share in any thing.
If You were in all circumstances with me
I would not need to take provisions with me (for may travel).

I concealed Your name out of jealousy1,
here I go camouflaging along curved and steep mountain tracks2
For You are the al-Haqq, none but You
If only I knew (the meaning of) "I"!

O Lord send blessings upon the Chosen One,
blessings that will make for safety for us.
O Lord send blessings over the Chosen One,
blessings that will serve as a cure for us.

 Qasidah Burdah : Al Firdaus Ensemble - SimplyIslam.Sg - 7/7/2019

“How generous the creation of a Prophet Adorned with excellent character! So graced with beauty, and radiant face.” – The Burda, Al-Firdaus Ensemble

Al-Firdaus Ensemble’s songs are always an ode to the Best of all Creation. The Burda continues along that thread. It is perhaps apt that we ruminate over these lyrics in this blessed month of Rabiulawal, as we seek to learn and remember our Beloved Prophet Muhammad, Allah’s Peace and Blessings be Upon Him, in greater debt.

The Burda
Verses from Imam al-Busiri´s 13th century poem.
O my Lord, bless and grant peace always and forever
Upon Your beloved one, the Best of all Creation

O Lord, pour your blessings upon Muhammad and upon
Our Masters, his family and his noble Companions

I beg Allah´s forgiveness for saying things I do not do,
As though I were ascribing progeny to one who was barren

I ordered you to be good, but then didn´t heed my own advice,
I was not myself upright, so what of my telling you, ´Be upright!`

Chorus

How generous the creation of a Prophet
Adorned with excellent character!
So graced with beauty, and radiant face

Chorus

O Messenger of Allah, your great rank
Will not be lessened by my petition,
If the Generous One appears as the Avenger

For surely this world and its companion the Next
Are from your generosity,
And part of your knowledge
Is knowledge of the Preserved Tablet and of the Pen

Verses from the Dua al Nasri by the 17th century Morrocan Sheikh, Muhammad bin Nasir

O the One to whose mercy we flee
O the One in whom the needy take refuge
O the One whose pardon is near, the Master of pardon,
O the One who answers the prayers of all that call on Him
In You, we seek relief, O Helper of the weak!
You are sufficient for us, O Lord!
There is nothing more majestic than the greatness of your power,
And nothing more forceful than the might of your rule

Bless and grant peace, O our Lord, to the one who is a mercy and cure for all creation
And upon the family and Companions together, to the number of stars which have adorned the firmament
Bless and grant peace O Lord to the one who is a mercy and cure for all creation
And upon his family the most honourable of people
And upon his companions, grant Your contentment and praise

Allah, Allah, Allah, Allah our Master!
Allah, Allah, Allah, treat me with your favour!
