This book marks a significant contribution to the debate around Ibn ʿArabī’s religious pluralism, focusing on his multifaceted approach to non-Abrahamic religions.
For nearly eight hundred years, the writings and ideas of the great Spanish Sufi master Ibn ʿArabī have shaped Islamic intellectual and spiritual culture, from North and West Africa and France on the one hand, to Iran, the Levant, Central Asia, and the Far East on the other. Modern scholarship on the “Greatest Master” is consequently at an all-time high. This book weighs in on a well-known aspect of his religious worldview, namely his perspective on religious pluralism, but does so from an entirely different angle. Offering a very close reading of his major works, newly translated by the author, and paying particular attention to a highly developed celestial metaphor prompted by his encounter with a group of pagan sun-worshippers, the book offers new insights into the nature and scope of Ibn ʿArabī’s understanding of Islamic inclusivism. Ultimately, the book contributes to our understanding of both interfaith dialogue and the history of world religions through the prism of Ibn ʿArabī’s work.
The book will be of particular interest to students and scholars working in a range of fields, including Islamic philosophy, Sufism, and intellectual history.
Review:
"Developed to answer an inquiry on the exact scope of the religious pluralism of 13th century Muslim Polymath and Sufi, Ibn ʿArabī, this valuable study unravels the strata of complexity in the trends of pluralism one finds in Ibn ʿArabī’s writings on religions. Acknowledging the taken-for-granted belief in his pluralism, the author invites us to reconsider the nature and extent of this pluralism from the perspective of the theology of religions’ tripod of ‘exclusivism-inclusivism-pluralism’, and he argues that this religious plurality can be better interpreted from the perspective of the notion of inclusivism: Ibn ʿArabī was, rather, inclusivist in his approach to other religions, as he believed that the Muhammadan Law includes all of them under its jurisdiction. Eventually, we are offered a fresh, inviting and far from simplistically reductionist examination of Ibn ʿArabī’s legacy into ‘pluralist-or-not-pluralist’ conundrum. The book will be quite useful to scholars and students, and will ably invite deeper explorations and greater intertextuality of the heritage of this very important Muslim scholar."
Najib George Awad, International Center for Comparative Theology and Social Issues (CTSI), Bonn University, Germany

"This book makes a significant contribution to the ongoing interpretative debate surrounding Ibn ‘Arabī's stance on religious pluralism, a key issue in the emerging field of Islamic Theology of Religions. It skillfully avoids simplistic, partial, or ideological interpretations, offering instead a more complex and nuanced perspective."
Adnane Mokrani, Pontificia Università Gregoriana, Italy

"A thought-provoking contribution to Akbarian studies that will generate much debate and discussion."
Mohammed Rustom, author of Inrushes of the Heart: The Sufi Philosophy of ʿAyn al-Quḍāt, Carleton University, Canada

"Ibn 'Arabī is considered a proponent of the doctrine of the unity of religions (wahdat al-adyân) but the Shaykh al-Akbar is first and foremost a Muhammadan, one who places the Reality of the Prophet at the summit of every spiritual hierarchy. He cannot be enclosed in any ‘perennialism’ that flattens the exclusivity of this rank. Nonetheless, it is precisely the all-inclusiveness of this function that brings all other religions under the authority of the Prophet and justifies them as a corollary of the doctrine of the Oneness of Being (wahdat al-wujûd). Dr. Abdel-hadi’s book enters into the dynamics of this perspective with an unprecedented depth, and his book poses a challenge in understanding the universal dimension of Akbarian thought."
Paolo Urizzi, Faculty of Oriental and Comparative Philosophy, Istituto di Scienze Umane, Italy

Journey to Allah:Ustadh Mohammad Ali | Friday Night Program | With love to all -Madina Institute USA-September 18,2026

Ustadh Mohamed Ali's Biography: From Searching to Centered
Mohamed Ali’s story is one of spiritual searching, resistance, and ultimately, transformation. Raised in Brooklyn, his family’s religious journey took them from Islam to Buddhism to Christianity and back to Islam. At 13, his mother suggested he take a year off from college at Howard University to study in Senegal. He agreed only after being promised a car and help with tuition upon his return.
His first months in Medina Baye were difficult. “I hated it—the heat, the flies, the unfamiliarity. I wasn’t practicing Islam at all,” he admits. But as time passed, stripped of distractions and surrounded by a community focused on faith and learning, Mohamed began to change. “Everything was stripped down to what mattered: community, food, God, shelter.” Inspired by the example of Shaykh Mahy Cissé—a man whose humility, generosity, and deep faith left a lasting impression—Mohamed found himself drawn to the very tradition he once resisted. He immersed himself in Quranic and Arabic studies, eventually earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Arabic literature and Islamic sciences. “Watching Shaykh Mahi, I realized this is what it means to be a Muslim. That’s who I want to be.”
Mohamed Ali spent 12 years studying in Medina Baye—completing primary, secondary, and high school programs at the African American Islamic Institute. He graduated in June 2024 and returned to the United States in December. Today, he lives in Atlanta with his wife and daughter, where he is dedicated to serving his community and continuing the work inspired by his hard-earned scholarship, education, and experiences in Medina Baye.

The Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA):

The Muslim Alliance in North America (MANA) is an organization that is heir to an historic legacy. That legacy is the struggle of Muslims of African descent to live as free men and women and to practice and propagate their religion in North America. From the time when Moorish and Latino Muslims, such as Pedro Gilafo, were brought to the Americas by the Spanish conquistadors; from the time of Ayyub bin Sulayman, a Muslim scholar in the British Colonies; from the time of Umar bin Said, another Muslim scholar living in the antebellum South; to this day of ours, African and African American Muslims have been striving to find bezels of prophetic guidance to assist us in our quest to not just survive, but to prosper and find spiritual haven in the sometimes heartless conditions prevailing in North America.
As heirs to that legacy, MANA endeavors to provide our community with the support it needs to prosper, grow and to pass the heritage bequeathed to us by those who preceded us down to those who will succeed us. Pursuant to that end, MANA endeavors to educate our community in ways that connect us to our history and raise our level of Islamic literacy. MANA also seeks to provide the support needed by individuals and our institutions to be efficient, effective and prosperous. MANA further seeks to galvanize our community, so that together we can make a meaningful contribution to the ongoing struggle for justice and racial harmony here in North America

“The Secrets of Creative Love: The Work of Muhammad Iqbal”, by Professor Annemarie Schimmel This public lecture was delivered by the German orientalist, Professor Annemarie Schimmel, on 11th of November 1996, at the lecture theatre in Victoria & Albert Hall in London. The lecture is printed in a book, and can be found at Al-Furqan's website: http://www.al-furqan.com/publication/...

Abc Books:The Secrets of Creative Love. The Work of Muhammad Iqbal:Annemarie Schimmel: Al-Furqan Islamic Heritage Foundation

The pivotal theme of this book is the mystical orientation in the poetry and thoughts of Pakistani Muslim poet, Muhammad Iqbal. Iqbal. discovered the secrets of creative love through the gate of sufism. He considered such love, according to Schimmel, as the force which creates values and can never be content with its creation, a force that changes man incessantly. He believed love an experience that may offer itself to the believer at the middle of the road or at its very end, the supreme form of the creation of values and ideals and the endeavour towards achieving these.

Cambridge Muslim College: Nietzche in Paradise:Dr Francesca Bocca-Aldaqre

Congratulations to our former student Dr Francesca Bocca-Aldaqre on her new book Nietzsche in Paradise, published today. The book takes Muhammad Iqbal’s dialogue with the philosopher Nietzsche as a prompt for the discussion of Muslim influence on several key Western writers, including Daniel Defoe, Tolstoy, and others.

Review:Medioriente Dintorni Blog

“Nietzsche in Paradiso” is the latest and most precious book by Francesca Bocca-Aldaqre, able to help us discover the connections between the greats of European thought and the “Islamic world”.
Nietzsche in Paradiso
Nietzsche is in Heaven on Dante’s journey of the Muslim poet Muhammad Iqbal, while Victor Hugo tells with devotion the last moments of the life of the Prophet of Islam in the Légende des siècles. They are not anecdotes, but examples of an ever-present path between Islam and the West, which has not yet been told. Francesca Bocca-Aldaqre wanted to do it, revealing the unsuspected cultural echoes in the Western imagination – like Robinson Crusoe, modeled on an Arab novel of the year 1000 -, pairing not only lives, but a thought. The very Western Cartesian doubt can be read through the lens of al-Ghazali; the end of Heidegger’s metaphysics is linked to that of ibn ʿArabı-. Nietzsche in Paradise is manifest for Islam which often takes refuge in the East, and a new possibility for the West worn out by the clash of civilizations.
The author is one of Italy’s leading Muslim thinkers, and has written a number of books on Islamic thought, literature. She also writes poetry and stage plays.

Her journey into Islam began in Damascus in 2009, where she was introduced to Islamic spiritual learning and the foundations of Islamic Psychology through women’s study circles. Since then, she has dedicated her work to understanding the human being through both modern psychological sciences and the Islamic spiritual tradition.

The scholars have been honored with the writing of the blessed Prophetic biography because of what it contains of wisdom and lessons. For example, Shaykh al-Barzanji r wrote a Prophetic biography and named it ‘Iqd al-Jawhar fi Mawlid al-Nabi al-Azhar (The Jewelled Necklace of the Resplendent Prophet’s Birth) and it is commonly known as the Mawlid al-Barzanji.
Sayyid Muḥammad ʿUthmān Sirr al-Khatm, one of the students of Sidi Aḥmad b. Idrīs r, wrote a Prophetic biography , al-Asrar al-Rabbaniyya, which is known as the Mawlid al-Uthmani. These books are written in such a beautiful way that no one is able to achieve this except for those who have mastery in the Arabic language and have abundant knowledge of the religious sciences. As our Shaykh, Sayyidi Ṣāliḥ al-Jaʿfarī r is from the greatest of the scholars of his time, and the most eloquent of the poets of his era, he did not hesitate in giving us something like this and wrote for us a Prophetic, Muḥammadan biography and named it al-Aqmār al-Nūrāniyya (The Luminous Moons).
Shaykh Salih al-Jafari was one of the most famous scholars of the Azhar, the Muslim world’s premier institution of religious learning and its most authoritative voice, in the 20th century. He was also the imam of its mosque and a famous teacher and spiritual guide. He authored 15 works on various Islamic sciences, edited many others, and composed 12 volumes of poetry.

It presents an illuminating study of the Qurʾān, covenants of Prophet Muḥammad, and the historical record of Muslim governance. In this timely and ground-breaking work, Halim Rane and Ibrahim Zein recover the centrality of covenant (ʿahd and mīthāq) in Islam and its enduring imperative for ensuring accountability, building trust, upholding justice, and safeguarding peace and security.
In an era of profound global fracture and moral uncertainty, this book demonstrates that covenants are not peripheral but foundational to Islam’s theological and ethical architecture. It reveals how the Qurʾān’s covenantal ethos shaped Muslim consciousness, diplomacy, and interreligious relations―and how the violation of modern covenants and treaties threatens the very foundations of international law, justice, and order. Bold and urgent, rigorous but accessible, this is essential reading for anyone concerned with Islam, global justice, and our shared humanity.
Review:
This is a very erudite and indeed an eye-opening book. It is a thorough and exhaustive treatment that addresses a critical deficiency in modern scholarship on Islam. As the authors put it, a covenantal architecture is at the very heart of Islamic theology and law, and yet this most foundational dimension has been largely over-looked by most contemporary scholars. This book is a vital source for anyone, Muslim or non-Muslim, seeking to engage meaningfully with Islam’s rich tradition and its unfolding normative path and future trajectory.
Professor Khalid Abou El Fadl, Omar and Azmeralda Alfi Distinguished Professor of Law at the UCLA School of Law and world leading authority on Islam.

This important book makes a vital and much-needed intervention in the study of covenants in Islam, showing how they lie at the heart of Islam’s moral and theological vision. Drawing on close readings of the Qurʾan, the Prophet Muhammad’s practice, and formative historical texts, the authors argue persuasively for placing the covenantal tradition at the centre of Islamic ethics. Their analysis is both rigorous and original, offering fresh insight into questions of justice, coexistence, and interreligious relations, while also contributing meaningfully to wider debates on religion, law, and human dignity.
Abdullah Saeed, Sultan of Oman Professor of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Melbourne.

Covenants with Allāh is a remarkable work of scholarly research that sheds new light on the early history of Islam by extensive examination of the Qur’ān and affirming the authenticity of several foundational documents attributed to Prophet Muḥammad. In contrast to the injustices and exclusions that occurred under some later caliphal regimes, this book shows how the Prophet established an inclusive and ethical model of community―one in which all inhabitants, regardless of faith, were bound together in a shared ummah under his moral leadership. The authors remind us that Islam must be understood through its primary sources―the Qur’ān and the teachings of the Prophet―rather than through legal opinions or theological doctrines that emerged later and often deviated from the original covenantal vision. Their critical analysis helps readers, Muslim and non-Muslim alike, to grasp the true ethical foundations of Islam as a faith in the one just and merciful God. This study is both rigorous and deeply meaningful. It offers not only a powerful reappraisal of Islamic history, but also a hopeful basis for interfaith understanding grounded in trust, justice, and shared spiritual values.
Professor Wasim Salman, Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies, Rome.

This is a profound and illuminating scholarship that centralises the covenantal architecture of Islam and its ethical and moral foundations. Halim Rane and Ibrahim Zain argue eruditely and beautifully that Islam’s covenantal principles are crucial imperatives for upholding human rights and dignity and fostering equitable interreligious and international relations. At a time of when Islamophobia is on the rise, and divisive discourses are becoming mainstream, this timely book restores our faith in shared humanity, justice and compassion.
Professor Karima Laachir, Director, Centre for Arabic and Islamic Studies, Australian National University.

This is a timely and much-needed correction of an Islamic fundamental concept―the covenants (mithaq, 'ahd) with Allah. Covenants are the truthful and most fundamental 'keystone of Islam' that every Muslim should maintain. Establishing salah, giving zakah, performing Hajj, and fasting Ramadan, in addition to uttering the shahadah, are popularly known as 'the five pillars of Islam'. However, these actions, despite their importance, are merely practical manifestations of the 'Covenants with Allah' and not equal to them. The rest of the fundamentals of Islam that the Quran and Sunnah teach us are detailed in this book and necessary for every Muslim to know and practice. May Allah reward the authors for this contribution to the Islamic concepts and Quranic study.
Professor Jasser Auda, Founding Chairperson, Maqasid Institute.

This bold and necessary intervention challenges dominant narratives on Islam by centering Covenants with Allah as the foundation of the Islamic tradition. With intellectual clarity and analytical rigour, professors Halim Rane and Ibrahim Zein draw on scripture, prophetic precedent and Islamic history to recover a covenantal ethic rooted in trust, responsibility and moral reciprocity. A vital contribution for scholars, practitioners and all committed to a more just and faithful global order.
Raihan Ismail, His Highness Sheikh Hamad Bin Khalifa Al-Thani Professor of Contemporary Islamic Studies, Faculty of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, University of Oxford.

The covenantal tradition in Islam is too often overlooked. This timely and compelling book reminds us just how deeply covenantal thinking is woven into Islamic thought and Muslim practice―from the time of the Prophet Muḥammad to the present day. In an era when human relationships and the international order have become overwhelmingly transactional―bereft of integrity and ethical grounding―this work powerfully underscores the enduring relevance of covenants, contracts, and commitments. It is a vital contribution for those seeking to address the various political and social crises in late modern societies and to reimagine a just and peaceful global order. A profoundly timely book.

Through analysis of the Covenants of the Prophet Muḥammad, which pledge protection to diverse faith communities, this book makes a profoundly important contribution to research on early Islam by determining the Covenants’ historicity and textual accuracy.
The authors focus on the Prophet Muḥammad’s relationship with other faith communities by conducting detailed textual and linguistic analysis of documents which have received little scholarly consideration before. This not only includes decrees of the Prophet Muḥammad, ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, ‘Alī ibn Abī Ṭālib, and Mu‘āwiya ibn Abī Sufyān, but also of important Muslim rulers. They present their findings in relation to contemporaneous historical writings, historic testimonies, official recognition, archaeological evidence, historic scribal conventions, date-matching calculations, textual parallelisms, and references in Muslim and non-Muslim sources. They also provide new and revised translations of various Covenants issued by the Prophet Muḥammad which were attested by Muslim authorities after him. The authors argue that the claim of forgery is no longer tenable following the application of rigorous textual and historical analysis.
This book is essential reading for Muslims, Christians, Jews, Samaritans, and Zoroastrians, as well as anyone interested in interfaith relations, Islamophobia, extremist ideologies, security studies, and the relationship between Orthodox and Oriental Christianity with Islam.
Review:
An official endorsement was granted to the authors on 24 March 2022, in Doha, on the day that the Greek Orthodox Church commemorates St. Sophronius of Jerusalem by His Eminence Archbishop Makarios of Qatar:
"This book has confirmed the stance of the Orthodox Church throughout the centuries as it concerns the authenticity of covenants of Muslim rulers issued mainly to Christian clergy, which had the purpose to protect monasteries, churches, or communities.
The Patriarch of Jerusalem Sophronius received the covenant from Caliph ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb, respected also by Ottoman rulers, which explains why a number of copies have been preserved in the official archive of the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate of Jerusalem, including even micro-sized scrolls that were used by the bearers for traveling. This historical memory and experience of co-existence is maintained until today.
Belonging to the Church of Jerusalem, I have the privilege to be consecrated as the first Archbishop of Qatar by the successor of Patriarch Sophronius, our current Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III, witnessing the historical connection between the Church of Jerusalem and Qatar, and at the same time renewing and extending this shared historical memory to peaceful co-existence.
It is a well-documented and useful book, thanks to the authors’ academic efforts, offering fruitful conclusions and a significant contribution that sheds light on a very important field for understanding the common history of co-existence between Christians and Muslims in the East."
Archbishop Makarios of Qatar, Greek Orthodox Archdiocese

"Professor Ibrahim Zein and Ahmed El-Wakil’s book, The Covenants of the Prophet Muḥammad: From Shared Historical Memory to Peaceful Co-existence, is particularly important for many reasons. It is a work that delves into the historical sources, with a detailed examination of Islamic historical works concerned with co-existence between Christians and Muslims. These are key to understanding the historical events which took place many centuries later, for there is no Caliph or Sulṭān who did not issue fermāns recognizing the historical and religious value of the Monastery of St. Catherine in Mount Sinai, the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem, the Church of the Nativity in Bethlehem, and Mount Athos. This study sheds light on the reasons behind this protection and why it was extended over the centuries.
Living on Mount Athos, a place exclusively dedicated to God with its 20 monasteries and theocratic status, we find the tradition of Muḥammad and the ahdnāme to be very much alive. All monasteries which have copies of the ahdnāme have preserved them with great esteem. In our time, where people can easily succumb to extremism, this book is an important reminder to return to the sources, history, and to tradition. Though there may have been conflicts, these do not define the essence of the relationship between Christians and Muslims, for there was also peace, co-existence, and mutual respect. As the pages of this study show, these are the values that reflect the Will of God. I thank the authors for this wonderful and useful work. May God bless you."
Father Theophilos Pantokratorinos, Monastery of Pantokratoros, Mount Athos

"This book is an important and extremely interesting contribution for the study of Islam, its traditional characteristics, its life in its earliest historical context, its relations with people of other religious traditions, especially Christians and Jews, as well as its encounter with various other people. What makes this study particularly distinct is the kind of "sources" it examines and on which it is based; something which makes the discussion about these sources, their very survival, their origin, authenticity, tradition, geography and any kind of information unveiled through them, topics of very important scholarly interest. The material is impressive; so is its treatment."
Daniel J. Sahas, Professor Emeritus University of Waterloo, Canada

"For its scholarship and its thoroughness of analysis, this book can open a new era in Muslim/Christian collegiality as Abrahamic Religions. This study of the covenants of the Prophet Muḥammad with Christians and other communities puts into practice and brings into our consciousness the ideals of the Document on Human Fraternity for World Peace and Living Together issued by Pope Francis and the Grand Imam of Al-Azhar University, Ahmed Al-Tayyeb, the words spoken by the Grand Ayatollah Sistani when the Pope visited him in Najaf – "You are part of us. We are part of you", and the encyclical Fratelli Tutti of Pope Francis.

The research of Ibrahim Zein and Ahmed El-Wakil confounds intolerant hearsay regarding the beliefs and practices of the Prophet Muḥammad, founder of Islamic faith in the God of Abraham, traditions, both Christian and Muslim, which have not accurately conveyed the deeds of the Prophet with respect to Christians. These mistaken traditions have, over centuries, contributed to unnecessary hostility of some Muslims towards Christians and of some Christians towards Muslims. Now, with the publication of this book, there is no need for such intense suspicion and animosity between the faiths to continue.
Both Muslims and Christians should read this book and reframe their appreciation of each other.
Zein and El-Wakil have rigorously brought forward historic references to the covenants of the Prophet, carefully considered and authenticated the texts of such covenants convincingly, and so have given us confidence that the texts we have received of those covenants can be accepted as the testimony and the aspirations of the Prophet himself."
Dr. Steve Young, Global Executive Director of the Caux Round Table for Moral Capitalism (CRT), USA

"The publication of The Covenants of the Prophet Muḥammad: From Shared Historical Memory to Peaceful Co-existence marks a watershed moment in the history of Islam, one that may help provoke a paradigm shift in Muslim-Christian relations on a planetary scale. This monumental scholarly undertaking, rooted in rigorous archival research and groundwork, recenters our understanding of the religious and socio-political philosophy of the Prophet Muḥammad and contributes to realigning relations between Islam and Christianity. God and His Messenger will most certainly be pleased. Blessed be this book, blessed be its authors, and blessed be the peacemakers for they will be called children of God."
Dr. John Andrew Morrow, author of The Covenants of the Prophet Muhammad with the Christians of the World, The Messenger of Mercy, The Islamic Interfaith Initiative, and Islam and the People of the Book

"This book merits careful consideration. Full of new research and fresh arguments about the Covenants, Zein and El-Wakil’s work could substantially revise many scholars’ understanding not just of Muḥammad’s relationships to Christians, but of early Islam and other religions. Thought-provoking!"
Dr. Jason Welle, O.F.M. The Pontifical Institute for Arabic and Islamic Studies, Rome

"I am particularly happy with the high-level and outstanding results that accompany The Covenants of the Prophet Muḥammad: From Shared Historical Memory to Peaceful Co-existence, a study conducted by Professor of Islamic Studies and Comparative Religion, Dr. Ibrahim Zein, and Ahmed El-Wakil, a distinguished scholar on Islamic texts of early Islam, both of whom are active researchers at the College of Islamic Studies at Hamad bin Khalifa University in Qatar.
Anyone who has followed the publications of these two authors will find that this book is a culmination of their previous studies concerning what happened during the first century of Islam. By respectfully treating the sources at their disposal, their new approach contests what has been almost universally established from the post-Crusade period up to our own times by mainstream academia. The authors’ methodology is based on etymology and the semantic study of terms used in early Islamic texts to reveal important historical information not so obvious at first sight. Having studied an extensive number of copies of the ahdnāme, they uncover that Muḥammad, according to the Will of God, established a huge legislative framework during the last ten years of his life orientated at the co-existence of the nations of the Holy Bible and which aimed at restricting all manner of possible conflict between them."
Dimitrios E. Kalomirakis, Emeritus Director of Christian Antiquities of the Greek Ministry of Culture

"The Covenants of the Prophet Muḥammad: From Shared Historical Memory to Peaceful Co-Existence sheds new light on documents of protection which the early Muslims granted to the various communities of the Near-East, among which were the Armenian people. The book demonstrates how the Caliph ‘Umar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb extended his protection to the Armenian Apostolic Church when he entered Jerusalem, making a convincing case that this was based on a precedent set by the Prophet Muḥammad. Ever since, the Armenian Apostolic Church’s uninterrupted presence in the Holy Land has been universally acknowledged by Muslim rulers, including Ṣalāḥ al-Dīn al-Ayyūbī in his memorable fermān.
We thank the authors for their work which we believe will help strengthen the bonds of cooperation and brotherhood between Muslims and the adherents of the Armenian Apostolic Church."
Father Koryoun Baghdasaryan, Chancellor of the Armenian Patriarchate of Jerusalem, Armenian Apostolic Church

Neanderthals, evolution, and now artificial intelligence. On this OnePath Podcast, Hamza Karamali argues the problem was never the science. It is that we stopped teaching our children how to think. We cover the Sapiens claim that religion was invented as a useful fiction, the argument from contingency, and then evolution at length. Does it remove the need for a Creator? Where do Neanderthals and the fossil record sit alongside the Quranic account of Adam? And what happens to our children's faith when they reach a university where evolution is settled fact, and take their hardest questions to a machine instead of a teacher? Hamza Karamali is the founder of Basira Education and the author of Why Islam Is True, a book and website setting out Quranic arguments for the existence of God, the messengerhood of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, and the purpose of life. Originally from Canada and now based in Turkey, his work draws on the classical science of rational arguments preserved in the tafsir tradition. About The Book:
Other religions are cultural preferences, but not Islam. Islam is objectively true and you can prove it. Based on the seminal online course designed and taught by instructor Hamza Karamali, this textbook provides students with detailed, evidence-based knowledge of all the core tenets of Muslim belief. It tackles the central questions facing young Muslims, including how we know that God exists, how to respond to the arguments of modern atheism, and the meaning of suffering in the world. By working through this textbook, students are empowered to use logical reasoning, science, and revelation to nurture sincere faith that is supported by proof. Why Islam is True is the first course in Basira's Modern Curriculum series.
About Basira Education:
Our mission is to develop intelligent and conservative Muslims whose grounding in the Muslim scholarly and spiritual traditions enables them to critically integrate modern science and culture into their religious worldview.
Our goal is to help conservative Muslims preserve their religious worldview and pass it on to their children by providing a religious curriculum that is thoroughly grounded in the traditional Islamic sciences while explicitly engaging the difficult questions raised by the physical sciences and the humanities in the curricula of modern schools and colleges.
Religious curricula that are taught at home or in the mosque are disconnected from the curricula that children and young adults are taught in schools and colleges. This creates a conflict in the minds and souls of religious students.
The conflict lies in two areas: (1) in the physical sciences, which train students to analyze the universe through the lens of materialism, and (2) in the humanities, which acculturate them into a non-religious worldview that moralizes autonomy and suspects authority and tradition, particularly when it is religious.
This conflict sows confusion into the minds of religious students. Strong relationships with healthy religious families and communities can overpower the confusion and the religious students can grow into religious adults who are successful in their families, communities, and careers.
But when these relationships are absent, or when they turn sour, or when they are overpowered by other non-religious relationships, then the seed of confusion grows into religious doubt, and students’ religious confidence in public settings begins to wither. Eventually, their faith can shrink, their religious practice in private settings can wane, and they may lose interest in their religious identities.
Atheism is spreading rapidly among all religious communities, and Muslims are no exception. It is spreading even in the Muslim heartlands, where some have estimated rates of atheism as high as 5%. The justifications of formerly-Muslim atheists always return to one of the two areas of conflict—the materialism of the physical sciences or the moralized autonomy of the humanities.

YouTube Video:Why Islam is True with Shaykh Hamza Karamali (SeekersGuidance): Inspiriting Reminders (5:21 Hours Course)-Jan 22, 2020

Bismillah | 01: What is Islam? The Shaykh surveys some of the common meanings that are given to “Islam” and then clearly defines what these presentations mean when they say that “Islam” is true. 09:01 | 02: God Exists If Islam is true, then it would make sense for God to have communicated evidence of His existence to us. In fact, He did. This presentation unpacks a key Qur’anic verse that argues that the contingency of the universe is evidence that God exists. 32:41 | 03: What is a "Necessary Being"? In this episode Shaykh Hamza unpacks the meaning of “necessary being” in order to show that it is not a mysterious philosophical concept. Rather it is exactly what religious believers mean when they speak about God. 49:36 | 04: Response to a Materialist Objection A widespread objection to the argument for God's existence, is that positing God as the solution to the problem of contingency is an arbitrary solution, and that one could just as well replace God with the physical universe or with the Big Bang. In this episode, Shaykh Hamza shows that this is a hasty and fallacious objection that does not take the time to understand the meaning of the conclusion that God exists. 1:09:03 | 05: God and Science Atheists frequently claim that the only reason why people have historically believed in God was that they feared natural phenomena, and that by giving scientific explanations for those phenomena, scientists have rendered that belief obsolete. In this episode, Shaykh Hamza explains that this is a straw-man argument that misrepresents the facts (a) that belief in God has historically been based on evidence and (b) that belief in God coexists (rather than conflicts) with science. It concludes by explaining that contradictions between religion and science prove that those religions are man-made, not that God does not exist, and that because Islam is not a man-made religion, modern science corroborates its truth rather than conflicting with it. 1:35:40 | 06: The Universe Began to Exist The Qur’an cites the universe as evidence for God’s existence for two reasons: (1) because it is contingent (as was explained earlier) and: (2) because it began to exist. In this episode, Shaykh Hamza explains the scientific evidence for the beginning of the universe and concludes with a brief explanation of why that is such compelling evidence for God’s existence. 2:05:55 | 07: The Kalam Cosmological Argument Muslim theologians formalized general Qur'anic arguments for the fact that the universe began to exist into precise philosophical arguments. Their arguments, historically unknown in the West, have only recently been introduced into contemporary philosophical discourse as the "Kalam Cosmological Argument". In this episode, Shaykh Hamza explains the Qur'anic context of the argument and then unpacks the argument according to the clear, intuitive, and easy-to-grasp approaches of traditional Muslim theology. 2:29:01 | 08: Infinity is an Imaginary Concept The strongest objection to the “Kalam Cosmological Argument” hides behind the seemingly complex uses of various kinds of infinities in modern mathematics. In this episode, Shaykh Hamza explains the history and nature of modern mathematics, numbers, set theory, mathematical infinities, and the philosophy of mathematics, all in terms that anyone with a good high-school education can understand. The straightforward conclusion of the explanation of these concepts is that modern mathematical infinities are completely unrelated to the “Kalam Cosmological Argument”. Not only that, but the explanation also reveals several additional arguments that make the “Kalam Cosmological Argument” even stronger. This presentation is significantly longer than the other presentations in this series. 4:17:12 | 09: God Did Not Begin to Exist The beginning of the universe is evidence for the existence of a being that did not begin to exist, just as the contingency of the universe is evidence for the existence of a being that is not contingent. In this short episode, Shaykh Hamza recaps both of these arguments and concludes a series of presentations (2 to 9) that show that the universe is evidence for the existence of a being who is necessary and beginningless. 4:23:07 | 10: God is a Volitional Agent People have historically believed in two kinds of necessary being. Non-religious philosophers such as Aristotle and Avicenna argued for the existence of a necessary being who is the necessary and volitionless cause of the universe. Religious believers, on the other hand--Muslims, Christians, and Jews--have held that the necessary being who made the universe is someone who freely chose to create it, that He is alive, and that He has knowledge, will, and power. This presentation gives evidence for why the religious believers are right and why the non-religious philosophers are wrong.
4:33:37 | 11: Science Reveals God’s Unrestricted Agency Modern science has revealed that God can do anything. We have always discerned purposes in the universe--the purpose of our eyes is for us to see and the purpose of our ears is for us to hear. But modern science has delved deeper than ever before into these purposes to reveal a unimaginable, unfathomable, undeniable intricacies in way that God made the universe. These intricacies incontrovertibly reveal that God can do absolutely anything. 5:12:35 | 12: Who Designed the Designer? Atheists object to the argument for God’s existence from design by asking the question, “Who designed the designer?” This objection is, in fact, a sound objection because the design argument in its common formulation by Christian theists is, in fact, flawed. But it is not a valid objection to the inferences that Muslim theologians make from design because they make a different argument. “Why Islam is True” is a series of 40 short presentations that analyze the claim, “Islam is true,” by dividing it into a series of sub-claims and then evaluating their truth by examining the evidence for them, as well as the evidence against them. As they do this, the presentations explain the relationship between Islam and science; the fallaciousness of the arguments of contemporary atheists; the relationship between Islam and other faith-traditions; the role of prophecy in human history; the nature of life, death, and the human soul; and the purpose of human existence. While the presentations are all grounded in the traditional Islamic sciences—particularly the sciences of Islamic theology (‘ilm al-tawhid), Islamic logic (mantiq), Qur’anic exegesis (tafsir), and legal theory (usul al-fiqh)—their goal is to answer the questions that any open-minded and thinking graduate of a contemporary high-school or university—Muslim or not—would ask about Islam. The conclusion of this series of presentations is that God does, in fact, exist; that the Prophet Muhammad (God bless him and give him peace) was, in fact, His messenger; that He did, in fact, teach us the purpose of our existence on earth; and that we will, in fact, be resurrected after our deaths to stand before and be judged by God.
