The Place of Literature in Sufism: https://muslimlitfest.com/event/the-place-of-literature-in-sufism/

Sufism is the science whereby purification of the soul, refinement of character and developing the inner and outer states can be recognised, so that a person can attain eternal bliss, rectitude of the ego, pleasure of the Lord of the worlds and attain His gnosis.
Traditionally this training was achieved by a unifying bond between the Sufi Master and disciple. Sufi Masters of the classical period believe that the true spiritual path cannot be traversed through books alone. Rather, the disciple must travel the path under the guidance of a true spiritual guide, using practical methods to achieve spiritual enlightenment.
So what is the role of literature in Sufism?
As a student of his father, Shaykh Muhammad Sadiq Alawi, Zain ul-Abidin takes us through some of the traditional practices of Sufism and explains the ways in which literature can be used to support and complement this tradition, helping aspirants of the modern age.

Zain ul-Abidin is the son of the learned scholar and the distinguished Sufi sage, Shaykh Muhammad Sadiq Alawi. Shaykh Muhammad is known by many in the UK as one of the leading propagators and teachers of Sufism and the spiritual path, having spent his whole life calling people to Allah and His Messenger. Zain ul-Abidin continues his father’s teachings and has expanded the reach through new channels, holding regular gatherings online, and is an integral part of expanding Sakina Publishing to new audiences.

Delving into the true meaning and experience of Islamic spirituality, based on a person s awareness and recognition of his existence and place in Creation, Malik Badri reveals the limitations and contradictions of the current prevailing schools of psychology that deny the existence of the soul and perceive humans as mere machines acting on external stimuli. Combining the rich traditional Islamic wisdom with contemporary knowledge, the author advances a unique approach to the understanding of the human psyche and the self that gives a central position to meditation and contemplation as forms of worship in Islam. It is a book addressed to anyone who is interested in the Islamic approach towards the urgency felt by modern societies who are yearning for the rediscovery of the long-forgotten and neglected aspects of their lives.

Malik Badri is Professor of Psychology at the International Institute of Islamic Thought and Civilization (ISTAC), Malaysia. He is a qualified therapist and the author of a number of books including The Aids Crisis: An Islamic Socio-Cultural Perspective (1997). (2000).

Amazon: The Book of Contemplation: Book 39 of Ihya' 'Ulum al-Din - Muhammad Isa Waley PhD

The Book of Contemplation is the thirty-ninth of the forty Books of The Revival of the Religious Sciences (Ihya’ ‘ulum al-din) and the very last to appear in English translation. Abu Hamid al-Ghazali’s purpose in this Book is to explain the nature and importance of contemplation, or reflection, as an act that enriches the thinking person with increased knowledge of, and wonder at, the Creator and His creation. In Part 1, he defines and introduces the subject, explaining its importance with reference to the Qur’an, Hadiths, and sayings of wise and pious Muslims. In Part 2, he expounds his own highly original views as to the nature and fruits of contemplation. Part 3 offers detailed guidance on the most appropriate and beneficial subjects for reflection, some relating to human traits and actions and others to Divine Attributes and Actions. In Part 4, he explores in detail aspects of God’s creation, which, when viewed with an observant eye and considered with a worshipful heart, are full of wonders and offer an inexhaustible scope for reflection—from the artistry of the spider and bee to the unimaginable vastness of the heavens, which themselves are dwarfed by what lies beyond them.

Review:"It can be said that this extraordinary book explains the mysterious tenth book of Aristotle’s famous Nicomachean Ethics, the purpose of our existence being mystical contemplation, an idea Aristotle left unexplored. The Qur’an is replete with verses asking us to reflect, contemplate, meditate, and use our intellects, reminding us that essentially our highest purpose resides in doing so. Thus, it makes perfect sense that the Prophet, God’s peace and blessings upon him, informed us that 'One hour’s meditation exceeds a year’s devotion,' (according to another recension, it exceeds devotion of sixty years). This translation adds to the remarkable work of others who have contributed to Fons Vitae’s wonderful efforts to bring the entire Ihya’ ‘ulum al-din of the great imam to modern English readers. The seasoned translator, Muhammad Isa Waley, happens to be a practitioner of the path’s practice. This book stands as a propaedeutic to the final chapter of the Ihya’, which is on death, the meditation upon which was a constant practice of our Prophet, God’s peace and blessings upon him, who said, 'Do much pondering upon the destroyer of delights: death.'” —Hamza Yusuf

Author:Muhammad Isa Waley is a British editor, translator, and researcher specializing in the literature of Muslim spirituality in Arabic, Persian, and Turkish, and also in Islamic manuscript studies. He has an MA in Oriental Studies from the University of Cambridge and a PhD in Persian literature from the School of Oriental and African Studies, London. For 45 years he was Curator of Persian and Turkish manuscripts and books at the British Museum and later the British Library, and has worked as a consultant and/or editor for many organizations, publishers, and individuals.

Researching the Leadership of the Prophet Muhammadﷺ : Joel Hayward - NYUAD Institute - October 2, 2023

Evaluating historical leadership effectiveness poses challenges, particularly when analyzing figures like the blessed Islamic Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, a military leader involved in wars that created new power structures and a prophet who ushered in dramatically original and transformational ways of understanding monotheistic religion and its relationship with politics. Records often bear the bias of their authors, and attributing success or failure directly to a leader’s actions may overlook external factors and contributions from others. Despite these hurdles, this talk strives to offer an objective, meaningful exploration of Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ leadership. Speaker Joel Hayward, Author, "The Leadership of Muhammad: A Historical Reconstruction" (Claritas Books, 2023); Professor of Strategic Thought, Rabdan Academy

YouTube Video:https://youtu.be/aDDxTa8CAkg?si=NjDKOYC8xbkpH3_D

Amazon: The Leadership of Muhammad ﷺ: A Historical Reconstruction - Joel Hayward Given the Islamic Prophet Muhammad's immense impact on history, there are surprisingly few books that specifically analyze his leadership. The few that exist maintain that Muhammad was a wonderful leader because he was a wonderful man; that is, he succeeded in his mission because of his superior morality and personal qualities.Professor Joel Hayward sees this as an incomplete and almost inadequate explanation. He does not disagree that Muhammad was a moral and decent man. Yet he has approached the Prophet's leadership from a different vantage point. He has scrutinized the earliest Arabic sources impartially according to the strict standards of historical inquiry in order to ascertain whether Muhammad's conscious actions, behavior and methods can provide any substantial and meaningful insights about the effectiveness of his strategic leadership. Hayward concludes that Muhammad was an uncommonly astute, situationally aware and self-reflective man with the ability to create and communicate a believable strategic vision of a necessary and desirable future. When reinforced constantly by his emotionally intelligent, skillful and very hands-on leadership, his cleverly communicated vision persuaded increasing numbers of people to follow him and risk everything willingly in the struggle to make real the bold new world that he foresaw.Hayward demonstrates through original, meticulously researched and rigorous analysis that Muhammad was "a profoundly effective leader". This engaging, accessible yet deeply scholarly book makes a major contribution to both leadership studies and the Prophet's biography.

Amazon-The Warrior Prophet Muhammad ﷺ & War - Joel Hayward

Most Islamic biographies deal with Muhammad’s use of warfare by usingan understandable but insufficient logic: that the Messenger of Allah wasthe ideal and paradigmatic human, so he must have been an ideal and paradigmatic military commander. Wanting Muḥammad’s behavior to conform to very modern ethical concepts and widespread (but not necessarily accurate) beliefs about the nature and conduct of war, the writers have created a narrative which, in significant ways, departs from the account clearly and consistently revealed in the earliest extant Arabic sources.Professor Joel Hayward sees this as an unhelpful explanatory tendency and believes that the modern depiction of the Prophet’s relationship with warfare which presents him as being rather antipathetic to war, indeed as virtually a pacifist who only fought reluctantly in self-defense — cannot actually be sustained by a thorough and even-handed analysis of the early Islamic sources. A committed Muslim himself, Hayward concludes that, within a competitive and conflictual environment with ubiquitous threats, warfare was necessary to make real the bold new world that Muḥammad foresaw. Through original, meticulously researched and rigorous analysis, Hayward covers all the raids and campaigns and demonstrates that Muḥammad correctly understood the necessity and utility of force and duly developed into an intuitive, effective and victorious military practitioner who developed and enforced a strict moral code so as to attain his goals whilst safeguarding the innocent. This engaging, accessible yet deeply scholarly and definitive book makes a major contribution to strategic and military analysis and to the Prophet’s biography. https://www.amazon.com/Warrior-Prophet-Muhammad-War-ebook/dp/B0BWK2MS5S

The First Islamic Classic in Chinese: Wand Daiyu's Real Commentary on the True Teaching: Sachiko Murata

in 1642, Wang Daiyu's Real Commentary on the True Teaching was the first significant presentation of Islam in the Chinese language by a Muslim scholar. It set the standard for the expression of Islamic theology, Sufism, and ethics in Chinese, and became the literary foundation of a school of thought that has been called "Muslim Confucianism." In contrast to Muslim scholars writing in every other language, Wang avoided Arabic words, opting instead to reconfigure the religion in terms of Chinese concepts and categories. Employing the terminology of Neo-Confucian philosophy, his overview of Islam is thus both congenial to the mainstream Islamic tradition and reaffirms Confucian teachings about the human duty to establish harmony between heaven and earth. This book will appeal to those curious about the manner in which Islam has flourished in China over the past thousand years, as well as those interested in dialogue among religions and the significance of religious diversity.

Chinese Gleams of Sufi Light investigates, for the first time in a Western language, the manner in which the Muslim scholars of China adapted the Chinese tradition to their own needs during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The book surveys the 1400-year history of Islam in China and explores why the four books translated from Islamic languages into Chinese before the twentieth century were all Persian Sufi texts. The author also looks carefully at the two most important Muslim authors of books in the Chinese language, Wang Tai-yü and Liu Chih.

Launch-good Fund Raising for Peter Saunders Book: Heaven, Earth & The Ten Thousand Things: The Lives of Muslims in China -

The Companions of the Messenger of God were the first Muslim ambassadors to China and established Islam peacefully and without confrontation through their excellent character, wisdom, deep piety, and luminous spirituality. Their descendants and successors presented Islam in a vocabulary that allowed the Chinese to accept Islam as a continuation of the Confucian and Taoist teachings they already followed. Islam has flourished and survived in China for 1,400 years in the face of overwhelming challenges. There is much that we can learn from the Chinese Muslim experience. Heaven, Earth & The Ten Thousand Things tells that story.
